Milford Haven produced a clinical display of finishing to earn a big win against Hendy on Saturday.

The Mariners, who led 30–0 at half time, scored no fewer than eight tries and have now risen to fourth place in division four west.

Leigh Broome got the ball rolling early on when he made a clean break from outside half and beat the cover defence to score. Full back Lee Riley then showed his pace when he hacked on from inside his own half and won the race to the touch down.

Further tries from Broome and centre Ian Rusinek ensured the Mariners had a bonus point by half time, while the outside half also added two penalties and two conversions.

The second half was again one way traffic and wingers Craig Thomas and Tom Bullivant both benefited from overlaps to score before Ben Johnson, playing only his second game at hooker after switching from the back row, crashed over from close range. Tom Arnold then capped a fine individual display when he sniped over from scrum half.

However, it was Michael Cockburn who provided the game’s highlight when he peeled off a lineout from 25 meters out. The burly prop then powered through several tackles and crashed over to take the Mariners past the 50 point mark.

The home side eased off in the final quarter and Hendy grabbed tries through centre Carl Rees and scrum half Kieran James, but coach Alan McClelland was still left pleased with his side’s display.

“We were clinical and played very well, especially in the first half.

“We dominated the lineout and the backs finished well. The only downside was we switched off towards the end and conceded two tries.”

McClelland said he was also positive about the side’s prospects in the new year, with several players due to return from injury after Christmas.

The Mariner’s next fixture is at home to Pembroke Dock on January 8th.
