PEMBROKESHIRE rugby will be able two boast two Olympians this summer after both James Davies and Jasmine Joyce were named in the Team GB Rugby 7s squads for Rio at 9.30am this morning.

Former Whitland and Pembrokeshire Schools flanker Davies, now at the Scarlets, was widely tipped to be part of the men’s 12-man squad after narrowly missing out on a place in Warren Gatland’s touring party to go to New Zealand in June.

The 25-year-old was a regular fixture for his country on the IRB 7s circuit before opting to concentrate on the 15-man code after the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

He will be joined by Sam Cross as one of only two Welsh players, with Luke Treharne a travelling reserve.

Meanwhile, former Ysgol Dewi Sant pupil and Haverfordwest RFC player Joyce, will be the only non-English representative in the female squad.

The 20-year-old, who was called up by Wales 7s after impressing for the Pontyclun Falcons and the Scarlets, has taken a sabbatical break from her studies in Cardiff Met to concentrate full time on her international commitments.

Both players have been included after a rigorous six week camp, where the players undertook intense training and competed in practice tournaments - before head coaches Simon Amor (men) and Simon Middleton (women) whittled down their respective squads of 24.

The competition takes place over six days of the Olympic Games with the women competing first from August 6-8 at the Deodoro Stadium - in a pool which includes hosts Brazil, Japan and Canada.

The men’s event follows from August 9-11 with Kenya, Japan and New Zealand the opposition for Team GB.
