Friendly rugby:

St Davids RFC 43-24 Bluestone RFC

There was an entertaining 80 minutes at St Davids on Wednesday night as the home side overcame Bluestone RFC in a game that yielded 10 tries.

The popular resort formed a rugby squad in February, and this was their fourth game after earlier clashes with Tenby United, Pembroke, and Haverfordwest.

But most importantly, the matches have formed part of an ongoing fundraising initiative from the Bluestone team, with all proceeds from the game at St Davids donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

On a near perfect night for rugby The Saints, who took the opportunity to give game time to a number of young players, started strongly as tries from outside half Scott James, winger Anton Matthews (2), and centre Fraser Watson, plus a penalty and four conversions from No 10 James, eased them into a 31-0 lead at the break.

But the visitors fought back early in the second half, and flanker Matthew Lewis and outside half Kial Keane went over for tries, with Keane converting one, to reduce the deficit to 31-12.

Home second row Chris Jenkins then powered over, before Bluestone No 8 Zac France-Miller responded by crashing over himself from close range.

The open rugby continued in the latter stages as James cut through for his second St Davids try which he also converted - before France-Miller also secured a try brace with a solo effort and Keane added the extras.

It rounded off an entertaining game played in a good spirit between the two teams - with the fixture likely to be repeated next season as Bluestone look to expand both their rugby side and fundraising efforts.
