MERLINS Bridge Amateur Boxing Club is delighted that they have produced yet another Welsh champion.

Ed Woollard, 27, was recently crowned Welsh Novice ABA welterweight champion at the finals night held the Blaenymaes Sports Centre, Swansea where he boxed brilliantly to gain a unanimous points decision over Bronson Miles, of Premier ABC, Swansea in the final.

The orthodox fighter progressed to the final by winning a unanimous verdict against Arran Marpur, of North Wales in the preliminary stage.

Woollard, weighing 10st 7lbs picked up a split decision over Jordan Collins, Afan Spartans ABC, Neath in a tough clash in the semi-finals.

In the final, Woollard moved and jabbed majestically to gain his first Welsh title much to the delight of his mentor and coach Graham Brockway.

“He’s worked really hard to win this title,” said Brockway. “All the fitness and gym sessions have paid dividends. This win will give him the confidence to move onto bigger and better things.”

Merlins Bridge ABC had a second boxer competing at the Welsh ABA Novice finals, Cameron Burrows, 16, but the orthodox youngster was beaten on a unanimous decision against Niall Spender, of North Wales.

His trainer Mark Jenkins said: “He’s been at the gym for three years and has made enormous progress. It’s a great achievement for any boxer to reach a Welsh final and we’re proud of our Cameron.”
