THE October Monthly Medal sponsored by Firwood Homes was played for on Saturday with the result determining the outcome of the Medal Championship together with the Millennium Cup and Nicholas Scratch Cup.

There was a reduced field as the early, heavy rain saw a number of late withdrawals. The rain eased as the day progressed and the later starters clearly had the best of the playing conditions. Credit to those early starters who battled through defying the elements.

It was no surprise, with so much at stake, that there was such excellent scoring. Peter Taylor has long threatened to show his true talent and Saturday was the day, he returned with a sensational nett 62 to scoop the Monthly Medal and the Medal Championship for which he had qualified. He must now sit back and await the judgement of Handicap Secretary Dai Humphreys.

There were a host of superb scores. You can feel for Tony Davey beaten into second place having scored what he must have thought was a competition winning nett 65, also Leigh Broome and Phil Davies both with a nett 66.

The best gross on the day went to RJ Roberts with a fine score of 70.

The result did not impact on the Brian Bebb Order of Merit which was secured by Liam Eva reflecting his consistently good performances in the strokeplay competitions throughout the year.

Liam just missed out in the Millennium Cup, which takes the best eight nett scores in the monthly medal competitions throughout the season, when he was overtaken by Shaun Dyson on Saturday with Shaun's impressive nett 70 in the early bad weather allowing him to just pip Liam for first place.

Shaun was also the winner of the prestigious Nicholas Scratch Cup which takes a player's 10 best gross scores in strokeplay competition during the season. This concludes an excellent season for Shaun who is the current Club Champion.

The Monthly Medal presentation was carried out by Mike Edds, of Firwood Homes, the company have been a long time sponsor and supporter of the club which is much appreciated.
