Services have been taking place across Pembrokeshire and the UK to mark the start of one of the bloodiest battles in history - the Battle of the Somme.

One hundred years ago, at 7.28am, thousands and thousands of British soldiers went over the top after a fierce artillery bombardment.

More than 19,000 British soldiers were killed in the first day alone, with 60,000 casualties in total in the first 24 hours.

Around one million men were killed on all sides by the end of the battle.

Services have taken place in Tenby - organised by the Tenby branch of the Royal British Legion - and Haverfordwest today to mark the anniversary.

Standards were lowered as a mark of respect to the fallen.
