A TEN-year-old boy who first picked up his drumsticks as a baby has become possibly the youngest musician in Wales to achieve Grade 8 with distinction in drumming.

Dylan Sanders-Swales, a year five pupil, at Johnston Primary School, recently earned the award after sitting a rock and pop drum exam at Trinity School of Music.

His dad Gareth says he believes Dylan may be the youngest drummer in Wales to achieve this level.

"It's a phenomenal achievement for a 10 year old in itself," said Gareth.

"And he didn't just pass, but passed with a distinction.

"The examiner’s comments included 'virtuosic playing', 'magic', and 'Wow - this is an incredible achievement Dylan. Congratulations. To achieve this aged 10 is really amazing.'."

Dylan has been playing drums since he was just one, but started having regular lessons at the age of six.

He sat his first exam (Grade 1) in 2013, Aged 7.

He has two teachers and, in the last year, has joined the Milford Haven Junior Town Band and Pembrokeshire Schools Big Band.
