MILFORD Haven’s answer to David Copperfield has been named as a finalist in Brains’ search for Real Welsh Legends.

Andrew McManamon, 51, is one of 10 nominees who have been shortlisted for Brains’ campaign to find and celebrate local legends from every Welsh town, village and pub as part of its ‘Real Welsh Legends’ campaign which was launched in March this year.

Andrew, known locally as ‘Andy Mac’, was nominated by his son, Aaron, for his ability to amaze with disappearing coin tricks and card stunts that leave his audience of punters lost for words. Aaron claims his dad can also ‘hypnotise’ people using a glass bottle and a match stick and can play pool, and win, with one arm behind his back.

Aaron, 24, said: “My dad is a well-known face in the pubs of Milford Haven, not least for his bar tricks which either leave people dumbfounded or rolling their eyes, but he always puts a smile on their face. He can also ‘hypnotise’ people using a glass bottle and a match stick.

“He’s also pretty good at playing pool and used to play with one hand behind his back when we were kids, just to give us a chance against him, but he still wouldn’t let us win. I think I could take him on now!

“He’s a classic proud-to-be Welsh dad and he’s a legend in my eyes.”

Andy said: “I’m very flattered that my son has nominated me to be a Real Welsh Legend. I wouldn’t call myself David Copperfield, but I can do a few bar tricks which the kids seem to love.

“I just like entertaining people while I’m having a pint at my local.”

Bruce Newman, head of marketing at SA Brain, said: “We all know a person who is part of the furniture in your local pub or always has a joke to tell. We wanted to celebrate these legends and share their stories.

“The campaign has revealed that Wales really is home to some great legends. We wish Andy luck as well as the other shortlisted finalists and no doubt his local community will support him.”

Andy will be one of 10 shortlisted nominees from across Wales and voting is now open for members of the public.

Voting will run until the end of July 2015 where four winning ‘Legends’ will win a series of unique prizes including the chance to have their local pub named after them, and a special trip to the Brains brewery in Cardiff to make their own limited edition ‘Legends’ beer. The winners will also have the chance to become the faces of Brains’ next advertising campaign
