A BRING and buy sale at Neyland School has raised more than £1,400 to help those communities worst hit by the recent Nepalese earthquakes.

The fundraising day on Thursday, May 21, was organised by members of the school’s Eco Club, who after hearing about the disaster - which has affected an estimated 8million people - wanted to help out.

Eco Club members from year five and six, along with members of class 5/6 NM, sent letters out to parents and local businesses asking for donations of goods, and set up stalls, raffle and tombola in the school hall.

As well as toy, book and bric a brac stalls, pupils also made and sold popcorn, fizzy drinks and headbands to drum up extra cash.

The money raised will be used by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which co-ordinates other charities in delivering essential aid to countries that have been hit by disasters.

It is reported that the DEC’s Nepal Earthquake Appeal has raised £65m since it opened for donations just over three weeks ago.

Teacher Natalie Moir said she was immensely proud of the children for organising the event themselves.

“They are lovely kids and they were really moved by what they saw and heard and decided they wanted to help,” she said.

As well as learning about life in different countries, the Eco Club also teaches children about recycling and sustainability.

“I think it’s important that children have an awareness of what else is going on in the world,” she said.
