A LOCAL business has come to the rescue after a memorial garden was callously vandalised, just days after it had been given a makeover by local volunteers.

Eldermeadows Nursery has donated new bedding plants for Hubberston Memorial Garden, on Chruch Road, after vandals ripped up freshly-planted flowers and threw them in the gutter.

Four men, who had been seen drinking alcohol in the garden, were issued with Section 27 notices by police as a result, and asked to ‘move on’.

The flowers had just been planted by volunteers as part of a community project to give the garden a much-needed makeover in time for a service to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War.

Local councillor Viv Stoddart, who planted the new flowers earlier this week, praised the nursery’s kind gesture, and said she was thrilled the garden would be looking it best in time for the memorials service on Monday (August 4).

As part of the service, which starts at 3pm, poppy crosses will be placed in the Memorial Garden in tribute to the ten men from Hubberston who lost their lives in the war.

As well as prayers and hymns, there will be a two-minute silence, and a wreath will be laid at the village war memorial.

Afterwards, Milford Haven Operatic Society will lead a selection of wartime songs, and there will refreshments at the Memorial Hall and Community Centre.
